Visa & Permit of Residence

Citizens from EU/EEA member states and Switzerland do not have to apply for a visa. They need a valid travel document (passport) for their entry to Austria. However, if you plan to stay in Austria longer than 3 months, you need a so-called „Anmeldebescheinigung“ (confirmation of registration). You can apply for it after your arrival in Graz and you need the following documents:
- Application form: http://www.bmi.gv.at/niederlassung/ -> „Formulare“ -> Antragsformulare -> scroll down to „Anmeldebescheinigung und Lichtbildausweis für EWR Bürger“.
- Passport or Identity Card and a copy of the identity page
- Passport photo
- Proof of accommodation (Meldezettel)
- Proof of sufficient health insurance (European Insurance Card)
- Proof of sufficient financial means

To be obtained within the first 3 months of your stay!
In case of non-compliance with this regulation, you loose your right of stay in Austria after 3 months, and a fine of up to 200 Euro may be imposed.
1. Residence up to 6 months
Non EU- or EEA-citizens staying in Austria for a time period of up to 6 months need a “Visa D”. Please contact the Austrian embassy/ consulate in your country of residence to find out which application documents are required. For information on the documents to be handed in with the application, please contact the Austrian embassy in your country of residence. Costs: 80 Euro.
ATTENTION: The visa D can NOT be extended in Austria.
2. Residence longer than 6 months
Non EU- or EEA-citizens staying in Austria for more than 6 months need a residence permit (Aufenthaltsbewilligung) which can be obtained from the Austrian embassy/consulate in your country of residence.
ATTENTION: Citizens from a number of countries can apply for the ‘Aufenthaltsbewilligung’ after their arrival in Graz. These countries include Australia, Canada, Croatia, Japan, Mexico, USA. Find a complete list here.
For the application you need the following documents:
- Completed and signed application form www.bmi.gv.at/niederlassung/ -> „Formulare“ -> Antragsformulare -> scroll down to „Aufenthaltsbewilligung“. The form is available as Word and PDF file including an explanation.
- Passport and a copy of the identity page
- Passport photo
- Birth certificate
- Criminal Record (if available)
- Housing confirmation (included in the ‘letter of admission’)
- Proof of sufficient health insurance (included in the ‘letter of admission’)
- Proof of sufficient financial means
